At first,Guillermo del Toro’s newest installment in theTales of Arcadiaseries appears to have more in common with Superman than any of the fantasy stories that inspiredTrollhunters,but under the surface of3Belowlies a story of immigrants, of prejudices, and of the very idea of “home”....

Liam Neesonhas certainly had an interesting acting career, with his earliest roles being from more than 40 years ago at this point (seeExcalibur, where he wasone part of an impressive ensemble cast). He gained more recognition in the 1990s, especially thanks to an Oscar-nominated role (more on that in a bit), and then he became an unlikely action hero starting in the late 2000s.Takenwas probably the single movie most responsible for this, and then much of his 2010s work kind of chased the trend started there, and that did admittedly lead to Neeson starring in his fair share of stinkers....

Even though Disney is family-friendly entertainment, there are plenty of people who were traumatized by Disney movies when they were younger. In the midst of the singing and talking animals, there is truly some disturbing imagery, especially in older Disney works. The fairy-tales on which Disney often base their films contain plenty of darker themes that translate a little towards Disney’s films. It’s unfortunate that Disney doesn’t tend to go to the dark side as much as they used to because they truly brewed up some frightening images....

Real-life coupleAlison BrieandDave Francooften work together on odd genre projects, but their latest collaboration,Together, might be the strangest one yet. Thebody horror movie opened to excellent reviewsfrom critics this week, but it appears to havedivided audiences.Togetheris aiming for a sturdy opening weekend haul at the domestic box office, although it will probably not find a spot in the top five. There have been a lot of questions swirling around Amazon’sLord of the Ringsprequel series, mostly because it’s going to beinsanely expensive. But the biggest question is about what, exactly, it will cover. While there is plenty of story to mine inJ.R.R. Tolkien’sSilmarillion, finding something that would be compelling in a TV series format and, surely, tie in to the feature films enough to entice casual viewers limits things somewhat. “She Wants Revenge” isn’tAmerican Horror Storyat its finest, but it does mark a major step back in the right direction after two especially disappointing installments. The episode kicks off by running through all of The Countess’ boy toys. First she’s busy planning her intimate wedding with Will Drake, then she manages to track down her long lost lover Rodolfo Valentino and finally it’s back to the Hotel Cortez to rekindle her romance with Donovan....

Earlier this year, Netflix took a swing at confronting the deeply troubling increases in suicide rates amongst teenagers with an adaptation of13 Reasons Why. In terms of viewership, it remains a major hit for a company that is $20 billion in debt, but as a depiction of depression, bullying, and suicide,13 Reasons Whyis wildly manipulative and astonishing in its cowardice. The show never bothers to depict finite absence, the full range of ugly and misguided responses to such acts, the horror of discovering a lifeless body in such an act, or … I could honestly go on like this for another paragraph....

Borderlands 3, the gonzo loot-driven RPG shooter from Gearbox Software, is getting another major update. The hit sequel just announced Season Pass 2, which will add two new DLC packs as well as a new game mode called Arms Race. The new pass debuts on November 10 across both current gen and next gen systems (both the PS5 and Xbox Series X launch that same week). The first DLC pack, titled Designer’s Cut, launches the same day as Season Pass 2, and promises to shake the game up quite a bit by adding a brand new skill tree to each Vault Hunter....

While at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, I saw one film that absolutely floored me in every possible way and is still my number one film of the year: directorLuca Guadagnino’sCall Me by Your Name. Featuring a fantastic screenplay by Guadagnino andJames Ivory, powerful performances from the entire cast, amazing cinematography bySayombhu Mukdeeprom, and brilliance from every other department,Call Me by Your Nameis one of those rare films where everything is just perfect and you walk out of the theater remembering why you love movies....
