Thor: Love and Thunderis slated to release this July, but almost nothing has been confirmed. The only information shared with audiences is the villain — Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) — and that Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) will take on the mantle of Thor.

We have finally been graced with the first trailer for the film a mere three months before its release window — the closest the first trailer to an MCU project has ever been dropped before. Now fans can start speculating on what might happen in this long-awaited film.
The Guardians Will Only Be In the First Part of the Film
We last saw the Thor (Chris Hemsworth) inAvengers: Endgame(2019), where he chose to join the Guardians of the Galaxy in their space adventures. Many fans have been hopingThor: Love and Thunderwould be filled with Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) trading quips with Thor and Rocket (Bradley Cooper); unfortunately, it seems like the Guardians will only be present for the opening of the film.

In every shot with the Guardians, Thor seems down in the dumps. His entire character arch seems to be centered around finding out who he is. Star-Lord’s advice he shares with Thor appears to be something he will say before dropping him and Korg (Taika Waititi) off on a planet — seemingly Sakaar — before leaving Thor to his soul-searching.
New Asgard Has Become a Touring Company
It seems that under King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), New Asgard has ventured into the travel market. This detail was leaked months before with the announcement of a LEGO set — The Goat Boat — that features the Asgardian ship with a sticker on the side that reads: Asgard tours.
In a short clip from the trailer, King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) seems annoyed and frustrated with her duties; this instance of New Asgard becoming a tourist destination might be the source of her discomfort. The trailer shows Valkyrie joining Thor and Korg on the boat. Maybe she is abandoning her duties for a stint?

The Woman with Blue Hair Does Not Exist
A brief moment of the trailer has Thor dressed similar to a pirate. A woman with vibrant blue hair swings to him, and the two share a passionate kiss.
Sure, this could be a part of Thor’s journey to find himself, but seeing as his former lover Jane Foster is a large part of the film — and this blue-haired stranger has never been seen before — it’s safe to assume this clip is simply from some sort of daydream Thor has. If not, then we get pirate Thor! Either way, fans won’t complain.

Loki Will Not Return
Loki (Tom Hiddleston) has been a staple in all three previous Thor films. The God of Mischief — and brother to the God of Thunder — has been integral to Thor’s character arc in the MCU. In fact, out of the seven previous MCU films in that Thor has appeared,Loki has been in 5 of them. He only missed out onAvengers: Endgamebecause he was busy being dead.

Loki has been tied up in his multiversal adventures with the TVA on his titular showLoki(2021). Seeing how Season 1 ended — and knowing there is a Season 2 coming — it is safe to assume that Loki will be too preoccupied to make any cameo in Love and Thunder.
Gorr’s Killing Spree Started Because of the Blip
The after-effects of Thanos' snap have been the crux for most of Phase 4’s stories and character arcs. The main villain ofThor: Love and Thundercould be no different.Gorr is a character in the comics who dedicated his life to killing every God in the universe.
His motivation originally came from the death of his wife and child. It is possible that in the MCU, Gorr was blipped, and when he returned, he found his family dead. This is an educated guess as the trailer has not shown anything about Gorr.

Gorr Will Kill Zeus
The trailer has a brief clip that looks like it could be Olympus — the mythical home of the Greek gods — and even more interesting, this clip had Zeus throwing lightning bolt-shaped weapons.
If the Greek Gods are coming into the MCU, the only reason might be so that Gorr will have some gods to butcher. From a storytelling perspective, Gorr will have to kill at least one god to prove that he is a threat, and what better introduction is there than killing the top god of the Greek pantheon?
Gorr will attempt to kill Star-Lord.
Yes, the Guardians will most likely only be at the beginning of the film before dropping Thor off, but there is an essential detail that fans could easily forget: Star-Lord is a god.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2(2017) revealed that Peter Quill’s dad was Ego (Kurt Russell) — a Celestial — who Gorr might consider a god. It is likely that the climax ofThor: Love and Thunderwill have Thor and Jane saving Star-Lord from the clutches of the god butcher.
Jane Will Have Cancer
Jane develops cancer in the comic runThor: God of Thunder (2014), becoming Thor. Using the power from the hammer is the only way she can stay alive.
Jane in the MCU may have developed a similar disease, causing her to transition into the Goddess of Thunder. One possible source for this could be when the Ether — aka the reality stone — was trapped inside Jane and almost killed her. Cancer or not, the Goddess of Thunder is what audiences are looking forward to the most.
New Asgard Will Be Destroyed by Gorr
One of the first shots of the trailer show Thor walking through flames. In this shot, he wears the same furred cape he wears in other scenes. This proves that this scene is not a flashback and does take place in the events of the film.
It might be a stretch to assume that the flames Thor is walking through would be the ashes of New Asgard, but this would be an excellent way for Gorr to really get to the God of Thunder.
Thor Will Give Up His Powers
The film’s plot revolves around Thor being spiritually lost and trying to find his place in the universe. A shot in the beginning of the trailer has Thor planting his new weapon — Stormbreaker — in the dirt. This could symbolize Thor is giving up his powers or sacrificing his hammer to grow another world tree (or possibly another Groot). For those who remember, Stormbreaker’s handle is made from the arboreal alien, so — in theory — planting Stormbreaker could grow a new Groot.
After the death of Tony Stark and Captain America’s retirement at the end of Phase 3, Thor could be next in line to go.Chris Hemsworth has stated that he still enjoys the role,so it would be a shock if he were to die in this film, but he might at least hang up his cape and become more of a comedic on-looker for the rest of his MCU run.
