In 2017, Nolan directedDunkirk, a WWII film starringTom HardyandCillian Murphy, following groups of Allied soldiers who are surrounded by the German army during a brutal battle.Dunkirkis streaming on Netflix in the United Statesand OSN globally, where the film is one of the top 10 streaming hits in more than 10 countries, including Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia.Dunkirkgrossed $533 million at the box office against a $100 million budget, and it also earned strong scores of 92% from critics and 81% from audiences onRotten Tomatoes.
During a 2017 interview with the Qatar Tribune, Christopher Nolan spoke about both the scale and the human element ofDunkirk. Nolan revealed he considers Dunkirk an“intimate epic”that keeps the point of view with the soldiers, and no one else. He also admits to avoiding anothercommon war movie trope, which is switching to a room full of generals planning their next move. He continued, “I didn’t want to give the audience knowledge the characters didn’t have.” By keeping the characters and audience on the same page,Nolan makes it easy to latch onto the characters. Lastly, he spoke about using an IMAX camera to filmDunkirk, saying that he tries to “shoot more of each project that way.” Nolan followed through on his word —The Odysseywill be the first ever filmshot entirely on IMAX cameras.
