Thebody horror movie opened to excellent reviewsfrom critics this week, but it appears to havedivided audiences.Togetheris aiming for a sturdy opening weekend haul at the domestic box office, although it will probably not find a spot in the top five. The movie was given a major marketing push by Neon, the indie distributor behind five Palme d’Or winners in a row, and the recent horror breakoutsLonglegsandThe Monkey.
Togetheris sitting at a “certified fresh” 91% score onRotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, “Given an extra sinew of authenticity by the metatextual casting of Alison Brie and Dave Franco at the top of their game,Togetheris a body horror that’s as emotionally sticky as it is memorably gnarly.“In his review, Collider’sRoss Bonaimepraised the Brie and Franco’s performances, and wrote that “the more absurd this concept gets, the more enjoyable it is to watch Franco and Brie embrace this ride.”
At 79%, the film’saudience score on Rotten Tomatoes isn’t too shabbyeither, which is unusually high for the horror genre. However, itsC- CinemaScore is more in line with horror norms. This puts it in the same category asThe Nun 2,Barbarian,Old,Opus,Trap, andHeretic. The best-received horror of recent times isSinners, which earned an A grade; the worst-received isThe Exorcism, which earned a D.
2025 Is a Mixed Year for Horror at the Box Office
The year 2025 has been an uneven one for the horror genre, with a handful of studio releases having underperformed. Movies likeWolf Man,Drop, andI Know What You Did Last Summerfell short of expectations, althoughFinal Destination BloodlinesandSinnersemerged as breakout hits. Directed byMichael Shanks,Togetherwasproduced on a reported budget of $17 million, which makes it slightly more expensive than Neon’sThe Monkey.
