Anchorman 2isn’t as good as the firstAnchorman, but it’s got its share of funny moments and it also functions as a nice critique of cable news. While the sequel managed to outgross the original at the box office, it didn’t have the benefit of the DVD market that made the original so popular in the first place. The firstAnchormanwill remain a classic, butAnchorman 3is probably never going to happen.
But that doesn’t mean writer-directorAdam McKaydoesn’t have an idea forAnchorman 3. Speaking toCinemaBlend, he said the sequel will would have Ron and the gang embedded in a warzone:
I can give you like a little half sentence. I don’t know if you remember the first and even the second Iraq war. Maybe it was mainly the second Iraq war. They embedded journalists and that gave us kind of a whole story idea… I don’t want to say too much, but I’ll just tell you that embedded journalist, Ron Burgundy, Veronica Corningstone, the news team. That definitely gave us a big idea.
Given how the media covers war—with great reverence and with few questions—McKay could definitely have some fun with that territory. While we reported back in 2015 that McKay was consideringusing the Internet and New Mediaas a basis for the plot, embedding the crew gives the story more room to breathe since there are (sadly) plenty of wars for him to choose from, whereas modern media changes at a breakneck speed. The news trends of today could be gone by the timeAnchorman 3gets in front of cameras.
That being said,Anchorman 3still seems unlikely, and that’s probably for the best. While I love the characters, comedy sequels are incredibly tough and usually result in diminishing returns. I’m happy putting onAnchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundyfor the umpteenth time and quoting all the lines.
