Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first trailer forBaywatch. Directed byHorrible BosseshelmerSeth Gordon, the film is an adaptation of the popular 90s TV series of the same name and puts a comedic spin on the lifeguard tale withDwayne Johnsonfilling the role of Mitch Buchannon andZac Efronstarring alongside him as Matt Brody.
While Paramount spent years trying to get thisBaywatchmovie off the ground, withThomas LennonandRobert Ben Garantfirst taking a crack at the script, the take they finally settled on was an R-rated comedy in the vein of21 Jump Street—and that’s very much on display here. There are a couple of in-jokes to theBaywatchbrand, but other than that, this very much looks to stand on its own as something of a new take on the IP. As for the comedy, the trailer isn’t especially promising, but Johnson and Efron have more than proven their comedic chops in prior films, and I’m eager to see someone likeAlexandra Daddarrio—whose versatility ranges fromTrue Detectiveto thePercy Jacksonmovies—get to stretch her legs in the comedy realm.

The final screenplay credits go toDamian ShannonandMark Swift, making their comedy debut after penning the scripts for theFriday the 13threboot andFreddy vs. Jason, so I’m also curious to see what kind of story they’ve put together.
