Captain America: Brave New Worlddidn’t exactly win the hearts of critics or dominate the box office like previous entries in theMarvel Cinematic Universe, it’s fair to say. With a lukewarm 48% onRotten Tomatoesand a domestic haul of just $200.5 million – modest by superhero standards –the fourthCaptain Americafilm seemed poised to be forgotten. But now it’s enjoying an unexpected second wind, thanks to strong home entertainment sales, which some may have thought were a thing of the past.

According to Circana’s VideoScan datafor the week ending May 17, the Disney-owned Marvel Studios title debuted at No. 1 on both the overall DVD and Blu-ray sales chart and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, it also topped the 4K Ultra HD chart, proving thatfans are still willing to shell out for the high-def experience when it comes to the MCU– even when the reviews aren’t glowing. And it’s fair to see why, because the aerial battle scenes around Celestial Island are terrific and a rare high point in an otherwise middling entry into the MCU.

The movie, which seesAnthony Mackie’sSam Wilson stepping up as Captain America amid political turmoil and a conspiracy tied to the newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross (played byHarrison Ford), was expected to usher in a bold new era for the character. And while the theatrical release fell short of those expectations, its home release is faring much better.

Is ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Worth Seeing?

In a 4/10 review, Collider’sAidan Kelleyfelt that the film struggled under the weight of its own ambitions, and that, while meant to kick off Marvel’s 2025 slate and bridge major storylines fromThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier,The Incredible Hulk, andEternals, the film ends up as one of the MCU’s weakest entries. Despite a few standout performances – particularly Harrison Ford as Ross, andCarl Lumblyas Isaiah Bradley – the movie is marred by extensive reshoots, overuse of green screen, and unconvincing CGI.Even the Red Hulk finale felt more passable than impressive,a shame given the surprising amount of passion delivered by Ford in a role that would be exceptionally easy to phone in.

Captain America: Brave New Worldis now available on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD. Stay tuned to Collider for more coverage of the film.
