Christopher Nolanis making a major below-the-line shakeup on his new film. For the first time in almost fifteen years, Nolan will work with a new editor. After working withLee Smithon every project since 2005’sBatman Begins, Nolan has recruitedHereditaryeditorJennifer Lameto take on his mysterious film, which is set to get in front of cameras soon on track for a 2020 release date.
The news comes fromTHR,who also gives us our most enticing description of the film yet. According to the outlet, sources say “a globe-trotting adventure that has shades of the mind-bending nature ofInception"and it somehow involves the time continuum. Alrighty then.
Until now, all we’ve heard is that the untitled picture is a “blockbuster action” movie, andRobert Pattinsondescribed the script as “unreal” – a script he does not possess because had to belocked in a roomto read it. So yeah, this mind-bending time continuum tip is probably the beefiest plot description we’re gonna get for a while. Pattinson is set to star in the project alongsideElizabeth DebickiandJohn David Washington.
While it may not be standard procedure to cover to break out news about the comings and goings of film editors, (though it should be – they’re a silent weapon of film production that wields an extraordinary influence on the success or failure of a film and its performances,) this is a pretty big shakeup for one of Hollywood’s biggest filmmakers. Smith is the editor behind the bulk of Nolan’s most profitable and widely loved films including the entire Dark Knight trilogy,Inception,Interstellar, and most recently, he took home an Oscar for his precision work onDunkirk. However, Smith just got started onSam Mendes’s World War I film1917.
Lame is an interesting and exciting hire for the project, especially on the heels of her bold work inHereditary– for my money, the best horror movie of 2018 and a film that demanded the same kind of exacting precision you expect to see in a Nolan movie. Before that, she’s best known asNoah Baumbach’s regular collaborator, working with the filmmaker onFrances Ha,While We’re Young, andThe Meyerowitz Stories, as well as his most recent untitled film. She also editedManchester by the Sea, Kenneth Lonergan’s devastating drama, which earned her a BAFTA and Spirit Award.
We’ll see how the new collaboration comes together when Nolan’s film lands in theaters on July 01, 2025.
