“It’s obviously about family and love and loss, but it also makes you wonder if things are as they seem, and ifthings are really buttoned up, or not. All the seeds that have been planted this season will sprout next season, because the BAU is the most emotionally constipated team on TV right now.”

The outlet also confirmed the appearance of “an unexpected guest star,” whom many may wish to beMatthew Gray Gubler, after his brief feature earlier in this season ofCriminal Minds.Gubler’s character, Dr. Spencer Reid, who was last seen in Season 15, appeared in the “Time to Say Goodbye” episode of Season 18 to support JJ (A. J. Cook) at the funeral of her late husband, Will (Josh Stewart). The episode aired on Thursday, May 22.

‘Criminal Minds’ Season 18 Won’t End The Way Fans Expect

Ahead ofCriminal MindsSeason 18 premiereon Thursday, May 8, Rodriguez had an exclusive interview with Us Weekly during which he hinted that fans may be “distraught” bythe way the installment ends. He also spoke of the season generally, describing it as “dark” and completely “diabolical evil.” Tyler, on the other hand, who stars as Tara in the crime drama, recently called the final episodes of the mystery series’ latest season “a really beautifully built puzzle box,” adding:

“You really want to just sit, standby, becausethere’s a lot of complexity to those episodes. What’s been really great about being in streaming is how we’re able to build this more elegant and complex puzzle for people. It used to be just, ‘Solve the crime every week.’ Now we are also building this larger mystery.”
