Over the weekend, Crunchyroll held it’s annual Anime Awards in order to recognize and reward some of the year’s best TV series, movies, characters, and music in the field. We previously posted the entire list of nominees–which you cancheck out hereif you want to get caught up before learning just who won–and they included some recognizable names to even the most cursory of Western anime fans, names likeDragon Ball Super,Attack on TitanandYour Nameinstantly stood out.

Then there wasMy Hero Academia,a fantastic superhero-school series that enjoyed its Season 2 run and reaped plenty of awards nominations for it. It’s a title that’s gained quite a bit of recognition, deservedly so, but it’s also in good company with less well-known titles likeMiss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid,The Ancient Magus' Bride,Land of the Lustrous,Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans,Made in Abyssand many more. And winners or not, this is a solid list to start digging into contemporary anime TV series, movies, and manga if you’re interested!

(“It wasn’t rigged after all!") Kinema Citrus' anime adaptation ofAkihito Tsukushi’s manga, which tells of a young girl and her humanoid robot pal descending into the titular cave in search of her mother, debuted last summer; a sequel season is in the works.
