David Crossmight be known as one of the pioneering figures in modern cult comedy and the man behindArrested Development’s resident stand-in for The Blue Man Group, but, back in 2007, he was in a much different role as part of the ensemble for20th Century Fox’sAlvin and the Chipmunks. A live-action jukebox musical based on the 1958 animated band,Alvin and the Chipmunksbecame an unquestionable success upon arrival in theaters, storming its way to$362 million worldwide, split between a domestic total of $217 million and a further $145 million from overseas markets.

With the film reportedly made on a production budget of $55 million, this impressive global total earned 20th Century Fox and co. 6.6 times their investment, and that’s without accounting for the additional $142 million the movie made in domestic DVD and Blu-ray sales. Now, almost two decades on from their financial triumph,Alvin and the Chipmunksare continuing to prove popular, officially entering theDisney+ Top 10 in the USas of June 12, 2025. Taking spot #9 on the list,Alvin and the Chipmunkshave knocked the original 1977Star Warsmovie to #10.

Headshot Of Jason Lee

This success with viewers is indicative of the receptionAlvin and the Chipmunksreceived upon its arrival in 2007, with the film earning a fair 64% audience score on review aggregatorRotten Tomatoes. Alas, the movie was much less favored by critics, who awarded the film a poor 28% on the review site. This critic score is at least the highest of the series, with the following three movies,The Squeakquel, Chipwrecked, andThe Road Chip, earning 21%, 10%, and 16% respectively, with the lowest of these holding the record for the worst score in Cross’s entire filmography.
