Supermanmay be entering its fourth weekend of release, butJames GunnandDavid Corenswet’s Man of Steel shows no signs of slowing down. The new DCU is officially here to stay. However, that hasn’t stopped companies likeMcFarlane Toyscelebrating DC’s colorful past. Now the famous toy producer is back with figures based on one of the ’80s most popular shows.
A continuation ofMcFarlane’s newSuper FriendsDC Retroline, there are five six-inch figures for fans to fight over in Wave 2, including heroes likeSupermanandThe Flash. However, this wave also has dastardly villains like Cheetah, Toy Man, and Captain Cold. While most of the figures don’t come with accessories,Toy Man does have a cute mini-Superman to torture. They now join Wave 1, which includes Batman, Green Lantern, Lex Luthor, and Sinestro. Wave 2 can be pre-ordered now. They will be $19.99 USD each, or you can buy them in a bundle on McFarlane’s website.

A Lighter Tone for DC Comics
WhileDCon the big screen was focused on lacklusterChristopher ReeveSupermansequels and spin-offs on the big screen, Saturday morningcartoons were at their peak in the ’80s. For DC, they were entirely focused on the Super Friends. Acting like a very family-friendly version of the Justice League, the series lasted for over 12 years. From 1973 to 1985, a whole generation of kids were exposed to heroes like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Robin, and The Flash for the first time.
A lot of the characters seen in the show, like Lex Luthor, Hawkgirl and Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern, are going to be major parts of Gunn’s upcoming DCU.We’ve already seenLex (Nicholas Hoult)andHawkgirl (Isabela Merced)inSuperman, with the latter set to reprise her role inPeacemakerSeason 2. However, before Reeve’s Superman andMichael Keaton’s Batman were all the rage, theSuper Friendswere keeping the brand alive. Their adventures were very silly and outdated by today’s animation standards, but thisHanna-Barbera productionwas a trailblazer for the comic book genre.
