Never underestimate the power of a family film, especially as the summer begins and kids are getting out of school. The Angry Birds Movienabbed the top spot fromCaptain America: Civil Warand looks to be the #1 movie this weekend with an estimated gross of $38 - 40 million according toTHR.
Here’s a look at the Top 5 from Friday’s Box Office (viaDeadline):

The Angry Birds Movie
$10,900,000
Captain America: Civil War
$8,700,000
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
$8,800,000
The Nice Guys
$3,900,000
The Jungle Book
$2,700,000
But don’t cry too much for Cap. The movie is now thehighest grossing film of 2016, and is the four Marvel film tocross a billion at the worldwide box office. It looks like the film will wrap up the weekend with over $346 million domestic, and I wouldn’t expect it to drop out of the Top 5 any time soon.

In terms of this week’s other new releases,Neighbors 2: Sorority Risingopened on Friday $8.7 million Friday for a projected domestic debut of around $24 million. The 2014 movie was a surprise hit that garnered $49 million on its opening weekend of release, but that was a less competitive frame with the disappointingThe Amazing Spider-Man 2opening that summer movie season.
Finally,The Nice Guysopened to $3.9 million.Shane Black’s noir-comedy heads towards between $10 million and $11 million for the weekend, which is a bit disappointing. The movie also only scored a B- CinemaScore, which means moviegoers didn’t get the film they were expecting, which is a shame because I thought the marketing did a solid job of showing how funny and offbeat the film was (by comparison,Neighbors 2andAngry Birdsboth scored B+ CinemaScore ratings).
