It’s been three mostly quiet years since Warner Bros. announced it was developing a sequel toWill Smith’s hit dystopian sci-fi thriller,I Am Legend, and now the Oscar-winning star just delivered another update on the film.I Am Legendlit the world on fire upon its release in 2007, earning over $585 million at the box office against a $150 million budget and also netting scores of 68% from both critics and audiences onRotten Tomatoes. However, the film’s ending was viewed as controversial upon release for being much different than the novel on which it is based. Smith recently went on REVOLT’s Drink Champs podcast and was asked aboutI Am Legend 2, and he provided key details about his co-starMichael B. Jordan’s character:
“What we were gonna do was the prequel, so we were gonna do the prequel. … And [Akiva Goldsman] was like, but wait, what if we make a new version from the alternate ending, where your character is still alive and, you know, Michael B. Jordan’s character currently is the head of a new settlement… He’s not my son… So there’s a settlement in Connecticut.”

Smith just put a long-standing rumor to bed that Michael B. Jordan’s character inI Am Legend 2was going to be his son, which we can now confirm is not true. Most settlement leaders in post-apocalyptic times have at least moderate trust issues and skepticism of strangers, so there will likely be some initial clashing between him and Robert Neville until the two realize they’re on the same side. It was announced in 2023 thatI Am Legend 2would be based on the alternate endingand not the theatrical ending, and Smith’s co-starAlice Bragaeven expressed her interest in returning, but word of her involvement remains unclear. It was reported last year thatWarner Bros. was eyeingSteven Caple Jr.(Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,Creed II) to directI Am Legend 2, but his involvement has also yet to be confirmed.
