Netflixwill deliver the second season of its iteration of the character, Wednesday Addams, whenWednesdayreturns later this year for its sophomore season. However, before the character was embodied byJenna Ortega, the titular detective was portrayed byChristina Ricci, who many saw as the classic Wednesday. Ricci played the morbid and emotionally reserved child in 1991’sThe Addams Familyand the 1993 sequel,Addams Family Values. So, when the character was announced to be returning in Netflix’s show, some audience members had somewhat expected Ricci to return to the role.
The streamer, however,opted for Ortega, but Riccididreturn,playing the supporting character, Marilyn Thornihill, a botany teacher at Wednesday’s boarding school,Nevermore Academy.While Ricci not reprising her role as the iconic character might have saddened fans,Ricci reveals she doesn’t think she owns the character.Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, theYellowjacketsstar revealed:

“The last time I played this part, I was 12. I’m now 44 years old, soI don’t have a feeling of ownership over the characterthe way that I think some people might imagine. Wednesday’s been played by many different people over the years. I’m not comparing it to Shakespeare, but you know how lots of people have played Juliet? It’s like that.”
‘Wednesday’ Season 2 Will Tell New Stories
Created byCharles Addams, the character of Wednesday Addams has been played by several actresses over the years. However, Ricci’s performance happens to come in two of the more acclaimed adaptations of the character’s story, albeit it’s nearly malevolent. Netflix’sWednesdayis created byAlfred GoughandMiles Millarand directed byTim Burton, with its series lead Ortega serving as producer. The show has proven to havebeen a tremendous success for the streamer, and a second season is currently in the works. Plot details remain scarce, but Ortega previously revealedhopes for more horrorfor the sophomore outing. “We just started the writers' room. I thinkwe want to up the horror aspect a little bit and then get Wednesday out of the romantic situation, let her be her own individual and fight her own crimes.” The coming season is expected to welcome new faces, includingSteve Buscemi,Billie Piper,Evie Templeton,Owen Painter, andNoah Taylor.
