Peter Jackson’sThe Lord of the Ringstrilogy brought to life the Third Age of Middle-earth in a way that had not been seen before.Jackson’s movies were perfectly cast, with actors who perfectly embodied and delivered on characters fished out ofJ.R.R. Tolkien’s lore. One of them wasOrlando Bloom, who played the perfect archer, the Elvish prince, Legolas. A panel with originalLord of the Ringscast members was hosted by Screen Rant at AwesomeCon, and with a wave of new spinoff movies based on Middle-earth,withtheupcomingThe Hunt For Gollumthe first. The question of who returns to the franchise hung thick in the air.

Bloom appeared as Legolas first inThe Fellowship of the Ringwhen his character, as well as a host of others, attendedthe Council of Elrondat Rivendell. One ofthe best elven characters in Tolkien’s lore, the Prince of Mirkwood, appeared in both the orginal trilogy and Jackson’sThe Hobbittrilogy. “I always think that if Pete says “Jump,” I say, “How high?“It’s funny because I think the elves go through so much of this world so many times because they’re ageless,” Bloom said during the panel discussion. “I was in The Hobbit, and it was really interesting revisiting the world. It was so different from Rings as an experience. It was a beautiful time, but this idea of kind of going back is like… “Absolutely, who wouldn’t want to go back to that place?”

The Magic of Middle-earth Might Have Changed Just A Little Bit

When Legolas appeared inThe Hobbittrilogy, he was a younger elf than he’d be in the original trilogy. At this point, the Ring of Power had not been found nor the Fellowship formed. Legolas concerned himself with helping his father,Thranduil (Lee Pace), King of the Woodland Realm, establish a new era of peace and prosperity between elves, dwarves, and men. This was a feat the pair were able to accomplish after the Battle of the Five Armies.

With co-star,Andy Serkis, returning as Gollum in and directingThe Hunt for Gollum, Bloom is open to returning but is certain that everything won’t be the same. He explains:

“But, of course, the magic of that moment is not something that could ever be repeated. The time, the age, the place that we were at; the place that the universe, the world, the planet was at, is impossible to recreate. But I think the idea of playing these characters? Being in that headspace of Legolas is awesome. My ADHD is gone; I am focused. And that’s something that I would always embrace because it’s this crazy, meditative state of being all-knowing and all-seeing, which is such a cool feeling.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollumis due for release in December 2027. TheLord of the Ringstrilogy is available to stream on Max in the U.S. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
