In the universe ofThe Handmaid’s Tale, sentences like “we’ll always have Paris” are utterly meaningless. Fans know this pretty well, but every once in a while a flicker of hope makes us believe that the story might have a happy ending. In this week’s episode, Nick (Max Minghella) was the one who felt like he could escape Gilead with June (Elisabeth Moss) to live a happy life in France. However, viewers weren’t prepared for what he did next.
In the episode, aptly titled “Surprise,” Nick makes a decision that pretty much shatters a relationship thatexisted ever since Season 1. It’s not that we fully trusted Nick at this point, but we discovered that, under pressure, he chose to revealJune and Moira’s plan at Jezebel’sto save his own skin. It’s an impossible situation, and during a recent interview with TV Insider, Minghella talked about the game changer and what’s next for Nick. He stated.

“[I]t was important to me that it really felt like it was a no-win situation. At least in his mind, that there was nothing he could do. And even though I’m not going to defend his decision at all, nor do I expect anybody in the audience to sympathize with it, it was important to me that at least in the moment, it felt like there was no escape and that he didn’t have a choice. Sometimes people don’t think clearly under pressure. I think that’s an important thing that I kept thinking about shooting that scene is like, we’re not always perfect people on TV. We want everyone to do the right thing all the time. But I like that this show has always embraced 50 shades of gray in everybody.”
