Pinning two very different personalities against one another,Rush Hourcenters around Lee (Chan), a Chief Detective Inspector from Hong Kong, who’s been sent to Los Angeles after a Chinese diplomat’s daughter is abducted. Despite being specifically chosen by the diplomat for the investigation, Lee’s presence isn’t appreciated by the FBI, who pass him off to the LAPD’s Detective James Carter (Tucker). Cut from entirely different cloths,Lee and Carter butt heads all across The City of Angels, but bond when they realize that they’ve been mutually cast aside by the FBI and LAPD. Seeing a moment to prove themselves, the pair seize the opportunity to solve the case on their own.

At the global box office,Rush Hourraked in an incredibly impressive haul of $244 million, making it a financial success for New Line Cinema. OnRotten Tomatoes(which owes its formation to the movie), the original feature in the three-film series sits with a 62% critics’ rating. Over the next nine years, two more films would catch up with the antics of Lee and Carter, helping to pushRush Hourinto franchise territory. As of 2022, a fourth installment was said to be in the works, withChan sharing the good news at the Red Seas Film Festival. Since then, updates have been few and far between, but we’re still hoping that the guys will get back together for more high kicks and hijinks in what would beRush Hour 4.
