The Soulslike genre has taken many different forms and taken players to many different times and places in the wake of FromSoftware’s successful games such asDemon’s SoulsandDark Souls. From the near future to the second dimension, there is a wide range of themes, aesthetics, and gameplay styles that can be found in this ever-growing and popular genre. Out of all these, however, none are weirder than taking the story ofPinocchioand infusing it with some FromSoftware blood. While the announcement of such a project was just as shocking as it was intriguing, players now have gotten their first look at the upcoming title as publisher Neowiz and developer Round8 Studio have released an alpha gameplay teaser trailer forLies of P.
The brand new trailer comes via IGN and shows off pre-Alpha gameplay of the upcomingSouls-inspired title, though, based on its gothic appearance and more aggressive playstyle from what was shown off, it would be more appropriate to call itBloodborne-inspired. The trailer opens with pans through the city Krat, which has become filled with violent automatons, ranging from normal humanoids to towering beasts. The player takes control of Pinocchio as he makes his way through the doomed city with familiar combat that fans of action RPGs should be accustomed to. There are parries, staggering and dodging with movement that seems to incentivize more aggressive play.

While aesthetically the game shares its gothic look withBloodborne, one notable inclusion is Pinocchio’s prosthetic. The arm will likely function similarly to how it did in FromSoftware’s last outing,Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, but one scene that showed the player pulling an enemy from an opposing rooftop to him like he was Nero fromDevil May Cryis one of the biggest aspects that grabbed my attention and also feeds into that aggressive playstyle. The trailer ends with the player breaking through a gate and entering a boss arena. Looks like there aren’t going to be any fog doors.

Lies of Pwas announced back on May 19 with a cinematic trailer and comes from Round 8 Studio, a South Korean studio that has only one game to their credit being the MMORPGBless Unleashed. Round 8 has never worked on a Soulslike before, but they hope to be able to become a worthy contender in a market space that includes the likes of not just FromSoftware titles but also the likes of Team Ninja’sNiohseries. The premise alone of turning the story ofPinocchioand turning it not just into a video game but a Soulslike is already enough to pique many players' interest.
Lies of Pis expected to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game does not have an official release window announced as of yet. You can watch the brand new gameplay teaser trailer for the upcoming Soulslike as well as read the game’s official description down below:
Lies of P, a fantastically baroque Action RPG inspired by the classic Italian novel ‘Pinocchio’ from Carlo Collodi. The ruined, but once beautiful city of Krat is on full display in the new video. Hideous and twisted automatons rule the landscape, and it’s up to P to find Mr. Geppetto and reverse the calamity that has befallen Krat.
