We don’t know how the currentStar Warssaga will end.Rian Johnsonwasn’t afraid to throw caution to the wind withStar Wars: The Last Jedi, and now fans will be free to speculate for almost two years for how the sequel trilogy could conclude.

But in an alternate timeline,George Lucaswas the one behind the sequel saga, andMark Hamillrevealed toIGNwhat theStar Warscreator had planned if he had maintained control over the franchise:

“I happen to know that George didn’t kill Luke until the end of [Episode] 9, after he trained Leia. Which is another thread that was never played upon [in The Last Jedi].”

Hamill went on to specify that while Lucas didn’t have scripts for the sequel trilogy, he had a basica idea of where he wanted the movies to go, and that Lucas’ idea was thrown out once Disney acquired the property:

“George had an overall arc – if he didn’t have all the details, he had sort of an overall feel for where the [sequel trilogy was] going – but this one’s more like a relay race. You run and hand the torch off to the next guy, he picks it up and goes.

“Ryan didn’t write what happens in 9 – he was going to hand it off to, originally, Colin Trevorrow and now J.J. […] It’s an ever-evolving, living, breathing thing. Whoever’s onboard gets to play with the life-size action figures that we all are.”

Let’s be honest: after the disastrous prequel trilogy, did we really want to see Lucas back in control? WhileThe Last Jedicreated some consternation among some fans, I personally think it’s an entry that people are going to love more and more as time goes on. It’s also a film that challenges whatStar Warsshould be and what it’s characters mean.

Obviously, we don’t know all the plot beats Lucas was going for, and seeing Leia trained as a Jedi would be a neat thing. But it’s also kind of neat to see her be a general and commanding forces. She’s been her own character through this series and not just a backup Luke Skywalker. While Lucas story remains a fascinating “What if?” I’m eager to see how the current sequel saga concludes.
