Okay, everyone, it’s time. Cue the drum roll and break out the party streamers, because Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) are officially broken up. We might only be just reaching Season 3 of theSex and the Cityrevival,And Just Like That…, but the unlikely relationship that has dominated the series (and the conversationaboutthe series) thus far has been the one between Miranda and Che, not even the de facto star of the series, Carrie Bradshaw’s (Sarah Jessica Parker), relationship with Aidan Shaw (John Corbett).
Whether you were a fan ofthe divisive Cheor not, one thing was clear: somethingneededto change between the two, as Miranda became entranced in their relationship to the point where she lost a major sense of herselfandher friends, devoting practically every waking moment to Che and neglecting the other major parts of her life. While it seemed impossible that the pair could ever live on the same plane of existence without the other, the duo finally split in Season 2. But with Ramirez off the cast for Season 3, where does that leave things with Miranda? With no Che to run back to, she’s got a large blank slate sitting in front of her for this upcoming season.

And Just Like That…
The series follows Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.
Miranda and Che’s Breakup Was Long Overdue
Plenty of viewers might’ve been rooting for Miranda and Che’s demise since the beginning of their relationship, but it didn’t start out all bad. The reason for their breakup had nothing to do with their age gap orMiranda’s sudden change to a queer relationship: it’s the imbalanced dynamic between the two that always had the capability of running the entire thing into the ground. Miranda was way too invested in the relationship, whereas Che was really only operating with a fraction of the enthusiasm, making the entire dynamic hard to root for or believe in.
Miranda spent their entire relationship bending over backwards to spend every waking moment of her life with Che, while Che could barely be bothered to keep down the noise levels in the other room to not to wake Miranda, who—for some reason—had chosen to sleep over at Che’s apartment every night just to head right back to Brooklyn at 5 a.m. On top of that, she also started attending classes at Columbia University, which meant Miranda’sreallyhad a ton on her plate without enough time (or sleep) to successfully take on each task. And that’s without even mentioning her close friendships with Carrie andCharlotte York (Kristin Davis), which were moved to the back burner once her relationship with Che started.

Carrie Bradshaw Is Ready to Dazzle as ‘And Just Like That’ Season 3 Begins Filming
Sarah Jessica Parker is out and about in a new set image.
The saying goes that at some point, something’s gotta give, and unfortunately for Miranda, that something ended up being her relationship with Che. While Che can certainly exist without Miranda, it’s unclear how Miranda will handle life without Che. She’s become so wrapped up in her partner’s life that she’s lost one of the main essences of being Miranda: independence.TheSex and the CityMirandathat we once knew isverydifferent from theAnd Just Like That…Miranda, and it ultimately comes down to that lack of individuality. The Miranda who once made the point that she shouldn’t be judged by realtors for wanting to buy a large apartment as a single woman is now the same person who can’t bear to be without her partner for a single second. After having spent the bulk of her life living under a more fact-based way of living, Miranda now relies solely upon emotions to make her decisions, which has completely thrown off the balance in her life.

We Miss the Miranda We Knew From ‘Sex and the City’
While it’s anyone’s guess how Miranda will kick off the season newly single in Season 3, she’s likely to still be a little hurt, as many of the micro-changes that occurred throughout her and Che’s relationship resulted in Miranda either obsessing too much or flipping out. More than anything, though, Miranda needs to finallyget back to being Mirandain Season 3. She fullybecameher relationship instead of letting the relationship be just another part of her in Season 2, and in doing so, she’s lost a major sense of herself.
Miranda’s breakup with Che should allow her to be jolted back into the woman we once knew inSex and the City, though now with the added knowledge that a whirlwind romance doesn’t have to mean everything else in your life needs to go up in flames. If there’s one positive thing that came out of her relationship with Che, though, it’s that Miranda has finally learned what’s truly important to her in her life. Not being there for her son, Brady (Niall Cunningham), when he needed her most was definitely a major wake-up call, putting things into perspective when it came toher relationship with Che.
What Does Sara Ramirez’s Departure Mean for ‘And Just Like That…’?
With the news that Sara Ramirezwon’t be returning as Che Diazfor Season 3 ofAnd Just Like That…, it leaves things up in the air for Miranda’s love life moving forward. While many of us are hoping for some time with Single Miranda, a certain new addition to the cast might be throwing a wrench into those plans. The wrench we’re talking about, of course, isRosie O’Donnell, as she posted a photo of her script to Instagram, confirming her casting and sending a bit of a shock wave through theAnd Just Like That…community.
Many fans have been speculating thatO’Donnell’s addition as the character, Mary(who will be appearing in the first episode of the season, according to her Instagram photo), could mean a potential love interest for Miranda. Being a queer icon herself, it would only feel right for her to pair up with Nixon, a queer woman in her own right, especially now that Miranda is out. Coming off another guest appearance in the queer series,A League of Their Own, this move feels particularly right for the cast ofAnd Just Like That…, so here’s hoping that Miranda has learned her lesson with Che and can move onto something a bit more stable with Mary in Season 3.
