The first full trailer forMiss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,Tim Burton’s adaptation ofRansome Riggs' beloved novel, has arrived, and there’s no doubt that this is a Burton film. The use of color, make-up, and general production design are a dead giveaway for what has become the recognizable aesthetic for Burton’s films, beginning in the early aughts with such works asBig Fishand his unfairly derided take onCharlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Despite the general consensus that Burton has softened and become less inventive in his recent years, he has turned out a few minor masterworks, includingDark Shadows,Corpse Bride,Sweeney Todd, andFrankenweenie. The look ofMiss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Childrenis similar toDark Shadows, as is the narrative arc, at least from the first look of things. The trailer focuses mainly on the plethora of special-powered youngsters at the titular home, most prominentlyAsa Buttefield’s Jacob, run by the head mistress of the title (Eva Green), but we do get a gander atSamuel L. Jackson’s Barron and a monster that looks like a more elaborate version of one of the mutts fromThe Hunger Games.

Whether this will all end up being a more expressive, nuanced vision of the power of idiosyncrasies, likeDark Shadows, or a less rousing, safe one-off likeAlice in WonderlandorBig Eyesis still very much up in the air, and will remain there until September 30th, when the film is released. For the time being, its intriguing enough to warrant further interest, but only up to a point.
