With only one week to go beforeAvengers: Endgamehits theaters, Disney and Marvel Studios have released a fresh batch of harmless new images that reveal absolutely nothing. Well, nothing beyond our core Avengers team lookingsuper sadand contemplative. Of course, you’d feel the same if a lot of your friends just dusted into thin air. It’ll be interesting to see how much of the film is spent on that dramatic beat—the aftermath of Thanos’s snap, and how that emotionally affects our heroes.
But they’ve got each other, and the plot ofEndgameappears to revolve around the OG Avengers team re-assembling (with some additions like Captain Marvel, Ant-Man, Nebula, and Rocket Raccoon) to chase the ghost of a good thing: reverse Thanos’s snap and bring their friends back from the “dead”—even if that means sacrificing themselves in the process.
Indeed, it very much feels like sacrifice will be a major theme ofEndgame, as it’s also been one of the major themes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. It began withIron Man, in which Tony Stark sacrificed his privacy to out himself as a superhero. Along the way, folks like Captain America, Thor, and especially Hawkeye have sacrificed much in their lives to save others. So the question remains, who makes it out ofEndgameunscathed?
