As we descend into December, it’s time to relish in all our favorite holiday traditions. So get out your hot cocoa, cozy up in your favorite jammies, and settle in for new footage from the nextDoctor WhoChristmas special.Disney+ has just released a new trailerfor the upcoming episode titled “Joy to the World” which will see a companionless Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) team up withBridgertonstarNicola Coughlanfor a once-in-a-lifetime adventure through time and space.
In the newly released trailer, the Doctor finds himself — literally — chasing a new mystery through the Time Hotel, a futuristic hotel with doors opening to “Christmas everywhere all at once.” He crosses paths with Coughlan’s Joy as well as a future version of himself, and while the trailer doesn’t reveal many plot details, Joy and the Doctor’s “top secret mission” will take them both forward andbackward in time as they face dinosaurs, Silurians, and more.
Joining Coughlan and Gatwa on their cosmic sleigh ride areSteph de Whalleyas Anita,Jonathan Arisas Melnak,Joel Fryas Trev,Peter Benedictas Basil,Julia Watsonas Hilda, andNiamh Marie Smithas Sylvia. The new episode was penned byformerDoctor WhoshowrunnerSteven Moffatwho also serves as an executive producer alongside current showrunnerRussell T. Davies,Joel Collins,Phil Collinson,Julie Gardner,andJane Tranter.Alex Sanjiv Pillai, known for his work behind the camera onRiverdaleandBridgerton, directs the episode.
What’s Next For ‘Doctor Who’?
While an exact release date has not yet been announced,Doctor Whois set to returnfor a second season with Gatwa’s Doctor sometime in 2025. After dropping Ruby (Millie Gibson) off with her family (both biological and chosen) the Doctor is on his own for the time being, and audiences can’t wait to see how he’ll cross paths with hisnext companion, Belinda Chandra. Having already stopped byDoctor Whoin a guest capacity — much likeKaren Gillan,Freema Agyemon, andPeter Capaldi—Varada Sethuwill play Belinda for at least one season. Little is known about the plot of Season 2, but Gibson will return for at least one episode, and she’ll bring a new boyfriend with her played byThe Little MermaidstarJonah Hauer-King.
