A way to beat the heat this summer is to stay inside and watch romantic comedies and Pluto TV is looking to help people do that this July. Starting July 1, theNora Ephronromantic comedyYou’ve Got Mailwill be available from the free streamer. The film starsMeg Ryan,Tom Hanks,Parker Poseyand others as part of one of three Ephron-penned flicks hitting the streamer. The logline forYou’ve Got Mailis as follows:
“Struggling boutique bookseller Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) hates Joe Fox (Tom Hanks), the owner of a corporate Foxbooks chain store that just moved in across the street. When they meet online, however, they begin an intense and anonymous Internet romance, oblivious of each other’s true identity. Eventually Joe learns that the enchanting woman he’s involved with is actually his business rival. He must now struggle to reconcile his real-life dislike for her with the cyber love he’s come to feel.”
‘You’ve Got Mail’ Isn’t the First Team-Up With Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, and Nora Ephron
Just five years before the release of You’ve Got Mail, Ryan and Hanks starred in the 1993 flick, also by Ephron,Sleepless in Seattle. Hanks plays widower Sam Baldwin, who moves to Seattle with his young son, Jonah (Ross Malinger). Jonah calls into a talk show, wanting to find a new wife for his dad and that’s when Annie Reed (Ryan) hears Sam over the phone and falls for him. Through a bit of a tangled mess, she asks Sam to meet her at the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day. The film is now also streaming on Pluto TV alongsideYou’ve Got Mailand another team-up with Meg Ryan and Nora Ephron,When Harry Met Sally. All three Nora Ephron films hit the streamer on July 1. While,You’ve Got Mail’s Joe Fox is ostensibly more “cranky” thanSleepless in Seattle’s Sam Baldwin,Hanks told The New Yorkerthat he found himself “cranky” while on set. He explained:
“I was very cranky, particularly when I first met her to do Sleepless in Seattle, because I was really big and, you know, I had some hits under my belt. We got together, and we were going to make this movie about a guy and a kid and ala di da di da—Sleepless in Seattle. And she was very intimidating, right off the bat.”
