Back in 2014, the Universal Pictures, Platinum Dunes, and Blumhouse Productions horror filmOuijasurprised critics when it held the number one rank at the box office for two straight Saturdays and scared up over $100 million on a budget that was a fraction of that. Now, the production companies are hoping to capitalize on an unending interest in scary stories coupled with a Halloween release date to see a repeat performance for their follow-up film,Ouija: Origin of Evil.

Writer-directorMike Flanagansteps in this time for a movie that actually travels back to 1965 to explore the source of scares mentioned in its title. As the first trailer for the film reveals, there’s a clever twist on the script that could add some freshness to the franchise. Unfortunately, the trailer also promises thatOuija 2will use familiar tropes as a crutch, so we’ll likely get a mix between a satisfying horror film and something we’ve seen many, many times before.
