LAIKA, the stop-motion animation studio behind the Academy Award-nominatedKubo and the Two Strings,The Boxtrolls,ParaNorman, andCoraline, has announced its fifth film. The feature, which is currently being referred to as simply “Film Five,” is in production at the studio and will be released in the U.S. by Annapurna Pictures. The announcement was made today by LAIKA President & CEOTravis KnightandMegan Ellison, Founder and CEO of Annapurna Pictures. International distribution will be handled by AGC International with plans to introduce the film to international distributors in Cannes via an invitation-only private screening of footage from the film, accompanied by an on-stage discussion between AGC Studios CEOStuart Fordand Knight....

Watson believes both Holmes and their nemesis Moriarty (Randall Park) died at Reichenbach Falls, but Season 1 soon reveals that Moriarty survived and has been secretly manipulating events to torment him....

Per Deadline, the studio is in early talks with theAmerican BeautyandSkyfalldirector for the project, though additional details are scarce. Last we heard,Peter Hedges(Pieces of April,Dan in Real Life) was penning a script looselybased on the original story. Recently, Mendes was in talks toa to direct a live-action adaptationofRoald Dahl‘sJames and the Giant Peachfor Disney. There’s no update on the status of that project and as the studio has demonstrated withJon Favreau, they don’t have any problem developing two projects with the same director (however, Favreau has deep roots at Disney and Mendes hasn’t worked in-house before)....
