A new “freestyle” video from Universal’sPopstar: Never Stop Never Stoppinghas been released online, giving us a look atAndy Samberg’s Conner4Real in straight up rap mode. In the vein of a concert documentary, the film chronicles Samberg’s Conner4Real as he faces a crisis of popularity on his sophomore solo album, after which he attempts to reunite hisBeastie Boys-esque group. As directed byAkiva Schaffer(Hot Rod) andJorma Taccone(MacGruber), the film looks to be a hilarious take on the culture of pop music today, withThe Lonely Islandflavor sprinkled throughout.

While the movie itself looksreallyfunny, I’m almost more excited that the release ofPopstaralso heralds the arrival of a brand new Lonely Island album. This new song, “I’m a Weirdo”, is simultaneously a Conner4Real song from the movieanda brand new piece of music from Samberg, Schaffer, and Taccone, and not so shockingly, it’s terrific. The lyrics are silly, but the song itself is incredibly catchy, and the accompanying video plays directly into the ego and dishonesty of Samberg’s Conner4Real character.
