Quentin Tarantino’sThe Hateful Eighthasn’t debuted in theaters yet — it drops in limited released this Christmas — and yet he’s got an idea or two about what his next project could be. Might one of them be a stage adaptation of this wintry Western starringSamuel L. Jackson,Kurt Russell, andJennifer Jason Leigh? Who knows, but the filmmaker at least thinks one would kill it.
Not too long afterThe Hateful Eightwas announced as Tarantino’s next project, he set up and cast actors for a live reading of the script in downtown L.A. Cut to now, and the director reflected on this experience during a roundtable with fellow Oscar hopefulsDavid O. Russell(Joy),Tom Hooper(The Danish Girl),Danny Boyle(Steve Jobs),Alejandro G. Inarritu(The Revenant), andRidley Scott(The Martian) forThe Hollywood Reporter.

The script-reading really went a long way, as far as that’s concerned.Inglourious BasterdsandDjango Unchained, you can read almost as a piece of literature, but I still had to figure them out [before shooting]. It’s not for sure that I’m going to pull them off. There is a “finding it” in the course of making it. But withHateful Eight, it was right there. I mean, if I had those actors and we did it in a little theater on Santa Monica Boulevard, 99 seats, it would kill, it would be terrific. I’m not saying the movie is great; I’m just saying that I like the material, so I had a confidence in it.
