Almost three months after its launch, thisRobert De Niro-led biopic will find its way to streaming and hopefully do better than its disappointing box office performance. Per TVLine,The Alto Knightspremieres on MAX on Friday, June 6and will then air on HBO the following day at 8/7c. In addition to De Niro, who stars in a dual role as 1950s warring crime bossesVito GenoveseandFrank Costello, the drama’s cast includesDebra Messing,Cosmo Jarvis,Kathrine Narducci, andMichael Rispoliin supporting roles.
The Alto Knightswas released on August 10, 2025, over a year after it was originally scheduled to arrive on July 27, 2025. Moreover, the year before, it was reported thatWarner Bros.considered delaying its release to 2025 due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.Barry Levinsondirected the film, which was written byNicholas Pileggi,and the producers attached wereIrwin Winkler,Levinson,Jason Sosnoff,Charles Winkler,andDavid Winkler.

Initially titledWise Guys,The Alto Knightshad beenin the workssince the 1970s but went into development in 2022 when Warner Bros. Pictures picked it up after decades of being passed on by every major studio. Castings were done between October 2022 and early 2023, and filming took place in December 2022 in Ohio. In October 2023, the crime drama was re-titledAlto Knights, and in January 2025, it wasofficially namedThe Alto Knights.
‘The Alto Knights’ Was A Box Office Bomb
With a budget of $45–50 million,The Alto Knightsperformed poorly at the box office, earning only $9.6 million globally; $6.1 million in the United States and Canada, and $3.5 million in other territories, despite a promising opening weekend. In the U.S. and Canada, it was released alongsideSnow WhiteandAsh, and was projected to gross $2–3 million in its opening weekend, but it ended up debuting at $3.2 million, finishing in sixth.
Similar to its box office performance,The Alto Knightsfound no favor with critics, who gave it a woeful39% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the consensus reads, “A competent but tired retread of mob movie tropes,The Alto Knightspits De Niro vs. De Niro with no real victor emerging.”On the other hand, the audience was not so disappointed as they described it as “a somewhat enjoyable pastiche of mob films” on the review aggregator website, where it has a 71% audience score.
