The movie was based on a true story, and was a modest hit at the box office upon its release in 2005,grossing over $75 million worldwide.Coach Carteris also notable for beingChanning Tatum’s debut film. The movie has since become something of a home video favorite, a reputation that it lived up to recently, when it debuted on Netflix.

Coach Carterwasthe sixth-most-watched film on Netflix’s worldwide chartson August 8, jumping three spots from August 7. It beat out the likes ofGladiator II,The Gambler,Storks, andAn Honest Life, which brought up the second half of the list. The number one film on Netflix continues to be the poorly reviewed romantic dramaMy Oxford Year, starringSofia Carson. The remaining films on the top five list wereKPop Demon Hunters,Happy Gilmore 2,Megamind, and theRobert Downey Jr.bombDolittle.

Coach Carterhas accumulated a total of over 200 points on FlixPatrol so far, affirming its 85% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The movie holds a 64% critics' score on the site, where the consensus reads, “Even though it’s based on a true story,Coach Carteris pretty formulaic stuff, but it’s effective and energetic,thanks to a strong central performance from Samuel L. Jackson.” Collider’sJennifer McHughlisted it amongthe 15 best basketball movies of all time.

Jackson and Tatum Have Both Leveled Up Since ‘Coach Carter’

Only a few years later, Jackson signed a multi-film deal to star asNick Fury in the MCU. He has since emerged as the highest-grossing film star of all time. Tatum’s career took off as well, thanks totheStep-Upmovies, and then, theMagic Miketrilogy. Tatum also remains one of the few male American stars that can still pull crowds to theaters. Last year, he played a colorful supporting role in the horror filmBlink Twice. He also co-directed the dramaDog, which made over $80 million globally a few years before that, and starred in the action-comedyThe Lost City, which grossed nearly $200 million worldwide.
