Netflix has announced the premiere date forStamped From the Beginning, the latest project from prolific Academy Award-winning filmmakerRoger Ross Williams. The feature is based on the New York Times bestseller and National Book Award winner of the same name byDr. Ibram X Kendiwhich chronicles the long existence and unsettling power ofanti-black racismthroughout American history. Williams’s latest joins the growing slate of high-profile projects arriving on the streamer in the Fall as it releases on November 15.

Utilizing animations of historical figures and moments from U.S. history,Stamped From the Beginningwill walk viewers throughthe many racist tropes, stereotypes, and imagerythat are ingrained in society and how they came to be so commonplace. It promises to be a chilling look at how this messaging reinforcedracist sentimentsover the years. To guide and enlighten viewers, the feature boasts a strong roster of female academics and activists likeDr. Angela Davis, Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, Brittany Packnett Cunningham, Dr. Jennifer L. Williams picked up his lone Oscar win for his short documentary filmMusic By Prudencein 2010, but he has plenty of acclaimed titles to his name including his Academy Award-nominated featureLife, Animated. This year has been an especially busy one for the director with the recent release of his documentaryLove to Love You, Donna SummerandThe 1619 Projectwhich he produced and directed two episodes of. He also went to Sundance earlier this year withCassandro, his latest feature starringGael García Bernalas the titular Liberace of Lucha Libre which will enjoy a limited run in theaters on September 15.
