It’s a little hard to believe, butSuicide Squadwill be in theaters in less than two months. It seems like just yesterday rumors were swirling that Warner Bros. was considering a feature film adaptation of the niche comic, and now oneBatman v Supermanand plenty ofreshoots dramalater,Suicide Squadis almost upon us. Last night during the NBA Finals game, two new TV spots for the film aired, and while they only show the briefest flashes of new footage, they do a nice job of contextualizing the movie as a good-time-havin’ affair, which seems like a direct response to the gloomy dullness ofBatman v Superman.
What’s neat aboutSuicide Squadis that it’s a writer/director movie, which is rare in the age of blockbusters.David Ayer, fresh off his World War II filmFury, wholly originated this villain-centric pic, and while reshoots did indeed take place to work on the film’s third act—possibly to add a new action sequence—the film we’ll be getting in August is going to be a David Ayer film. Moreover, he’s got a bang-up behind-the-scenes team, including cinematographerRoman Vasyanov(Fury,End of Watch), costume designerKate Hawley(Crimson Peak,The Hobbit), and Oscar-winningGravityandThe World’s EndcomposerSteven Price.

We’re still pretty in the dark on story specifics, which is another nice thing about this particular film. Too often we know every major plot point of a movie before we ever get to lay eyes on it, but withSuicide SquadAyer still has yet to confirm who the principal antagonist is. Here’s hoping Warner Bros. doesn’t go fullBatman v Supermanon us and spoil any third act reveals when the final marketing push kicks into high gear in July.
For now, take a look at the new TV spots below.
