James Gunn’sSupermandoesn’t give us the same origin story we’ve come to know for Clark Kent. We’re meeting these characters after they already know each other, and there are some established relationships to unpack for the audience. Collider’sRoss Bonaimevisited the set of Gunn’s film to talk to the cast and creatives about the new film and specifically where audiences will find some of the most iconic characters in the DC canon when the movie premieres this month.

Lois is Superman’s long-lasting love interest and a character who has always been a part of his legacy. Butthis time around it is uniquebecause we’re starting this story a bit more in the middle of Clark’s time at the Daily Planet. TheRichard Donnerfilm started with Clark as a baby and then showed him getting his job there. Most ofMan of Steeldid not include a lot ofHenry Cavill’s Clark working at the paper. But withSuperman, we get to see the whole team and how they interact with Clark.
During the set visit, Brosnahan spoke about the film starting in the middle of Clark’s time at the Daily Planet and how it works for this take onSuperman. “I think it’s a really cool choice to do that because it means that James is really trusting the audience,” Brosnahan said.
“I don’t think that it’s exclusionary. I don’t think it requires you to have read every Superman comic, or even know all the characters. You’re going to meet new characters, but in the world that we drop into, they just exist and they’ve had various relationships with each other that you may or may not be familiar with, but I think it’s still accessible if that makes sense.”
