What Is ‘Shane’ About?
Shanestars Alan Ladd (This Gun for Hire) as the title character, a drifter with a mysterious past who takes a job as a ranch hand for homesteader Joe Starrett (Van Heflin,3:10 to Yuma) and his wife Marian (Jean Arthur,Only Angels Have Wings). Shane connects with the Starretts' son, Joey (Brandon deWilde,Hud), especially once Shane demonstrates the shooting skills he used in his gun-slinging past. Soon, trouble comes to town in the form of land baron Rufus Ryker (Emile Meyer,Sweet Smell of Success), who wants to drive Starrett and his fellow sodbusters off their land. Shane handles Ryker’s goon Chris (Ben Johnson,The Last Picture Show) in a bar brawl, but that prompts Ryker to bring in deadly gunfighter Jack Wilson (Jack Palance,Batman). Will Shane return to the ways of violence he renounced? And if he does, will he be able to remain with the Starretts? The film ends on an ambigious and iconic scene of Joey calling out to the departng Shane that has been endlessly homaged.
Although tame by modern standards,Shanewas shockingly violent compared to the other Westerns of its day, and focused more strongly on the effects of violence both on its victims and its perpetrators. It remains influential to this day. The bond between Shane and Joey is mirrored inLogan, with the aged Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and his youthful clone Laura (Dafne Keen); scenes fromShaneare even featured in the film.
Shanewill bereleased on 4K Blu-ray on June 21, 2025, andcan be preordered now. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
