Here’s the first full trailer forThe Secret Life of Pets, the latest animated wonder from Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures. We’ve been seeing little snippets ofThe Secret Life of Petsover the last few months, but this is our first full gander at what the story of the film will be. The first teaser for the film, featuring little more thanLouis C.K.’s Max, a loving housedog, sitting at the door, waiting for his master, but now we get a better sense of just how devoted Max is to his owner, Katie, voiced byUnbreakable Kimmy SchmidtherselfEllie Kemper. You can check out the trailer right below:

From the looks of it, the animated film, which is directed byYarrow CheneyandChris Renaud, plays on the idea of people treating their pets like their children, with Max getting freaked out by the arrival of a ginormous, shaggy dog named Duke, voiced byModern Family’sEric Stonestreet. Somehow, they both end up on the street, far from home, and the coalition of fellow pets, represented byLake Bell’s Chloe andJenny Slate’s Gidget, amongst others, goes out to find them and get them back home.

There are plenty of other pet characters that they come into contact with on their way around, most notably Snowball, one tough bunny rabbit voiced byKevin Hart.Albert Brooks,Steve Coogan,SNL’sBobby Moynihan,Dana Carvey, andHannibal Buressalso lend their talents to what looks like a highly enjoyable, if not particularly original animated outing. Just on first glance, I see notes ofToy StoryandThe Odd Couplein the film’s narrative DNA, as well as other talking-pet movies such asHomeward Bound. Here’s hoping that I don’t cry like a lunatic atThe Secret Life of Petslike I did last time I sawHomeward Bound, which is more recent than I’d like to admit.

The Secret Life of Petswill be released in theaters nationwide on July 8th.
