“I Love Being a Turtle!”
The entire franchise celebrated its 40th anniversary last year. While the comics from the ’80s started out as dark, atmospheric pieces, the colorful1987 showbrought the Turtles into the mainstream with a family-friendly appeal.Turtle-Mania was popular in the ’80s with toys, VHS tapes, and other merchandise lining store shelves. The1990 live-action filmwould then balance the franchise’s dark-comedy roots with the all-ages antics of the TV series to a great degree of success.
35 years later and that film is still considered one of the best comic book films of all time. With its stunning moody New York atmosphere, memorable costume design, and martial arts action, it defined the early ’90s. Its two sequels,Secret of the OozeandTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, would lean heavily into the Saturday-morning cartoon nature of the franchise. This is because of the negative response the mature tone of the first film got from some parents.TMNTfans can relive that first live-action mission as the 1990 film is coming back to theaters this weekend for its 35th anniversary thanks to Fathom Entertainment. It was also just announced thatthe entire trilogy would be coming to 4K for the first time thanks to Arrow Video.
