The first season quickly found fans on U&Original, with some praising the new version as “brilliant” and “a great binge,” while others took issue with the darker tone and shift away from the original’s understated humor.
But many agree: Damien Molony owns this new Bergerac. AsThe Timeswrote, “Welcome back, Jim.”Digital Spypraised the reboot’s clever narrative pivots, andThe Nightlydeclared Molony “persuasively carries Bergerac’s darkness and dynamism.” Which is a very wordy was of saying the show is really good and so is the actor. Of course, not everyone was on board — some longtime fans of the 1980s version felt the newBergeraclacked the charm ofJohn Nettles’original portrayal. Still, with high-profile additions to the cast and a committed creative team, Season 2 aims to deepen the character’s mythology while continuing to explore crime, trauma, and redemption on the island of Jersey.
