Togethernessfans, you’ll need to huddle together in support over this news: HBO has decided to cancel theMark and Jay Duplassseries. Its Season 2 finale will now serve as the series finale. The series has never been a ratings hit, but then again, so few things other thanGame of Thronesreally are. HBO has keptGirlsrunning despite its niche appeal, likely because it caught the zeitgeist early on.Togethernessnever quite reached that level of infamy, for better or worse, and thus goes quietly now into the night.
THRis reporting that HBO’s comments on the cancellation were,
“Although we have decided not to proceed with another season of Togetherness, we look forward to continuing our strong creative collaboration with the talented Jay and Mark Duplass”
Personally, though I really liked the cast (which includesMelanie Lynskey,AmandaPeet, andSteve Zissis) a great deal and enjoyed the first season (as well as one particular standout episode in Season 2), the second season really exhausted me. In myreview, I took issue with the dark, awkward, painful, naval-gazing that made the new season something of an emotional slog. Harsh, yes, but it really is a show where you have to want to sit with and wallow in the emotional and dramatic problems of strangers instead of running from them.
But for those who have seen it through (and who will be rewarded by the finale, which is not only triumphant but easily serves as a series finale), Mark Duplass took to Twitter to thank the fans:
