HBO is playing the long game withA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but despite itsambitious plans for the show, it’s been confirmed by the network itself that the show has yet to be officially renewed beyond its first season. The upcomingGame of Thronesprequel, based onGeorge R.R. Martin’sDunk and Eggnovellas, is going to be a lot more intimate and low-octane than its predecessors, focusing more on character than carnage. However, while the network is clearly invested in its future, Seasons 2 and 3 are not yet confirmed.
In a recent interview withDeadline, HBO’s Head of Drama,Francesca Orsi, addressed the status of the series, revealing that while nothing has been set in stone, the executives are already thinking about how to build out the story across multiple seasons.

“We’re not picking it up officially, but it’s looking very good. We’re looking at it as a holistic piece, Seasons 2 and 3, because there’s three novellas.”
HBO have envisioned the series from the start as having a three-season arc, with each season adapting one ofthe novellas about the characters, but while HBO hasn’t actually greenlit the full thing yet, it’s clear they’ve got confidence in it. The network is even considering filming Seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back to keep up with the aging of the show’s young co-lead,Dexter Sol Ansell, who plays Egg — the future King Aegon V Targaryen.

“The role of Egg only spans not even a year, so you have to roll into it season to season pretty quickly because this little kid will grow up too quickly if we wait too long,”
The series has already wrapped filming on its six-episode first season, and Martin himself has expressed enthusiasm for the show.

“I’ve seen all six episodes now (the last two in rough cuts, admittedly), and I loved them,” the author shared on his blog. “Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible.”
While it’s still waiting for an official multi-season order, it does seem increasingly likely that HBO will officially confirm more seasons, most probably once it begins airing and inevitably gets good viewing figures, which is always a solid PR move.
