SinceI Love You, Man, one of the better big-studio comedies to be released in the last decade, director John Hamburg has been taking it easy it would seem. He’s directed some TV -New Girl,The Grinder- and directed a TV movie, but one would think the man behind such a beloved little comedy would have been ripe to start in on a new feature right after the first one bowed. One can never really tell about scheduling and the various dealings that go into these decisions, however.

Regardless,we now have our first look at footage fromWhy Him?, Hamburg’s official follow-up toI Love You, Man, via a green and red band trailer that 20th Century Fox released today. As one might have expected from a film starringJames Franco,Bryan Cranston, andMegan Mullaly, the whole thing looks uproarious, and it’s nice to seeZoey Deutch, who was a warm, hilarious, and charming presence inRichard Linklater’s gloriousEverybody Wants Some!!, getting more work as Cranston’s daughter and Franco’s intended.

The gags all look pretty strong, though there’s a sense thatWhy Him?has a more traditional storyline as compared toI Love You, Manwhich, likeSuperbad, contemplated the basic attractions at the root of all close male friendships.Why Him?looks more like a riff off ofFather of the Bride, which is not a bad thing at all and Hamburg certainly has the capacity to find something insightful, honest, and resonant out of such a familiar set-up.

Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry-and Ned’s panic level-escalate when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.
