Fans hoping thatY: Marshals, the newly announcedYellowstonespin-off starringLuke Grimes, would carry the signature stamp ofTaylor Sheridanmight want to temper their expectations — theYellowstonemastermind won’t be creatively involved in the upcoming CBS series centered on Kayce Dutton.
While Sheridan is officially credited as an executive producer onY: Marshals, Variety reports that his participation is minimal and largely in name only. Instead, the reins of the series have been handed toSpencer Hudnut, best known for his work as showrunner on the final two seasons ofSEAL Team. Hudnut will serve as both writer and showrunner for the spin-off, which has already been given a 13-episode order by CBS.

Y: Marshalspicks up after the conclusion ofYellowstone’s five-season run, with Grimes’ Kayce Dutton leaving behind the Yellowstone Ranch and joining an elite unit of U.S. Marshals. Blending his Navy SEAL background with his cowboy roots, Kayce now operates as the last line of defense in Montana’s ongoing war on violence — all while trying to balance family, duty, and the psychological toll that comes with the job. Per the official logline:
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana.”

Why Isn’t Taylor Sheridan Involved With the Kayce Dutton Show?
While CBS has emphasized the connection to theYellowstoneuniverse, it appears Sheridan’s absence is due to apacked slate. The creator has multiple other spin-offs in various stages of development, including the prequel1944;a Beth-and-Rip-focused project; andThe MadisonstarringMichelle Pfeiffer. Sheridan is also overseeing new seasons ofMayor of Kingstown,Tulsa King, andLawmen: Bass Reeves, as well as working onLandman,Lioness, and other shows under his expansive deal with Paramount.
When asked about Sheridan’s limited involvement,Amy Reisenbach, CBS Entertainment president, commented: “We’re still early in the process. He’s a very busy guy, but we’ll take what we can get.”Y: Marshalsmarks a notable shift in how theYellowstoneuniverse is expanding. It’s the first spin-off to debut directly on CBS rather than Paramount+ and the first without Sheridan at the creative helm. Whether that shift impacts the tone, pacing, or mythology of the series remains to be seen, but one thing is clear — CBS is betting big on Kayce Dutton, and we’re sure it’ll be pay off.

Y: Marshalswill premiere in 2026.
