After plenty of speculation,James Gunn’sSuperman(formerly titledSuperman: Legacy) officially got its runtime in the past 24 hours, with theman himself confirming it to be2 hours and 9 minutes long. Surprisingly, and perhaps for the better, this makesSupermanthe shortest filmGunn has helmed since 2014’sGuardians of the Galaxy. However, alongside confirming the runtime, Gunn was pressed by more commenters onThreadsabout a swirling rumor suggesting that outside forces, especially those higher up at Warner Bros., had forced Gunn to trimSuperman’s length. Putting said rumor to bed, Gunn replied:
“Zero truth to that. And they couldn’t even if that’s something that they wanted to [do]. It’s a DC Studios film.”

The upcoming movie, scheduled for a July 11 US theatrical release, will seeDavid Corenswetmake his long-awaited debut as Clark Kent, alongside a brand-new Lois Lane played byRachel Brosnahan. Elsewhere in a stacked cast,Skyler Gisondois set to play Jimmy Olsen,Wendell Piercewill play Perry White,Nicholas Hoult will finally take on Lex Luthor,Nathan Fillionwill play Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern,Isabela Mercedwill suit up as Hawkgirl,Edi Gathegias Mister Terrific, and more. Prior to the release ofSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, it has been heavily rumored thatMilly Alcockmight make a cameo appearance, although only time will eventually tell.
How Have Other ‘Superman’ Projects Performed at the Box Office?
Gunn and co will be hoping forSupermanto join the likes ofA Minecraft Movie,Lilo & Stitch, andTom Cruise’s final mission as Ethan Hunt,Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning,in helping set the stage for a financially fruitful summer of movies. In doing so, the film will have to follow in the footsteps of its often successful predecessors, at least in revenue terms. The controversialBatman v. Superman: Dawn of Justiceproved popular in theaters, earning just shy of $900 million. 2013’sMan of Steelturned a $225 million budget into $667 million, and 2006’sSuperman Returnscould only muster $391 million against a blockbuster budget that demanded $500 million for success. In total,Supermanmovies have made over$2.5 billion at the global box office, with that sure to rise to the $3 billion mark soon after the upcomingSupermanleaves its phone box in full attire and flies onto screens.
Supermanpremieres in theaters on July 11. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
