It may have taken a decade, butEmma Stone,Jesse Eisenberg,Woody Harrelson, andAbigail Breslinare finally back together for aZombielandsequel and thanks to the ten-year challenge, we’ve got a first look at the team reunited once again. The original cast of Ruben Fleischer’s charming 2009 zombie comedy are back at it inZombieland: Double Tap– yep, that’s the full title as revealed in the new poster.
Ruben Fleischeris once again directing from a script byPaul WernickandRhett Reese, with all parties involved coming off a lot of success in the superhero genre. Wernick and Reese have been killing it with theDeadpoolfilms, while Fleischer just delivered the biggest hit of his career withVenom. According to early reports, the sequel will once again put the quartet on a chaotic journey through America, where they face off again evolved zombies, run into some new human survivors, and face their growing pains as a makeshift family.

As for those new characters,Zombieland: Double Tapalready recruitedSet It UpstarZoey Deutchas a mystery character, and earlier today Deadline revealed thatDaredevilandLuke CagestarRosario Dawsonhas also joined the cast. Both actresses have signed on for mystery roles, so we don’t know how big of a part they have to play, but they’re both perfect fits for the snarky-but-charming dynamic audiences responded to in the first film.

WhenZombielanddropped in 2009, zombie horror was in a peak of popularity, coming off a surge of standout creative genre films that also includedDanny Boyle’s (28 Days Later),Zack Snyder’sDawn of the Dead, andEdgar Wright’sShaun of the Dead. In the years since, the genre has waned and shifted, all but owned byThe Walking Deadfor a significant chunk of years. There’s no cinematic surge of zombie films preceding the sequel (unless you count the wave of indie dramas set in the zombie apocalypse a laThe Girl with All The Gifts,Cargo, andThe Cured), so I’m very curious to see what kind of commentary and self-aware comedy Wernick and Rheese bring to the script. After all, what are the new rules when the double tap isn’t just known, it’s the name of your new movie.
We’ll find out whenZombieland: Double Taparrives in theaters on October 11.
